Free platforms are the best thing that ever happened to chess — open, polished, and the right place for the ninety-five games out of a hundred you play to get better. We are not an alternative to them, any more than a Friday-night poker table is an alternative to solitaire.
But every blitz player knows the other feeling. You are 1600, you have been 1600 for a month, and the rating point you might win changes nothing. The game is sharp, your opponent is real, and none of it counts. That is the moment AlgoChess exists for.
What changes when the game counts
Same blitz cadences you already play (3, 5, 10 minutes). Same Glicko-2 rating mathematics. Full rules, server clocks. The difference is before the first move: both players lock a real stake — from 1 ALGO — into an Algorand smart contract, and after the last one, the contract pays the winner 90% of the pot in about three seconds. Nobody holds your money in between: not us, not a payment processor, nobody who can say no.
The seriousness is the product. An opponent with money on the board does not abandon games, does not troll openings, does not play on their phone while watching television. Stakes are the strongest anti-nonsense mechanism chess has ever had.
The honest differences
Where free wins: unlimited games, tournaments every minute, opening explorers, puzzles, a rating that follows you for life — and zero risk. Nothing here replaces that, and we link to our own free practice for exactly that reason.
Where staked wins: intensity, honest opponents, and a win that pays. Your rating here starts fresh at 1500, moves only on games that had money on them, and prices what Stockfish will offer you — beating humans never makes your Stockfish odds worse.
Where we are smaller: we are young and the tables are quiet. Early players get fast matches at low stakes and the best odds we will ever offer — that is a trade some players want and some do not, and we would rather say it than have you discover it.
